A devotional series on the Christian life, through the book of Joshua from the Old Testament, for guys struggling with porn addiction or habit.
Our walk with Jesus Christ is not as simple as we likely hope.
In the beginning of Book of Joshua, God has already given the Promised Land to the Israelites; however, there is an interesting catch – they have to go take it.
As a Christian, life is somewhat similar – while Jesus’ death procured for us freedom from sin and death, it does not mean that they no longer exist – it means the bondage to them is gone.
So just like Joshua, we must then take that land.
We are commanded in the New Testament to:
- Put on Christ in Galatians 3:27
- Put on the new self in Ephesians 4:24
- Lay aside the old self in Colossians 3:9
Ironically, there are many more but in any case that sounds like we have some work to do.
The thing for us guys who struggle with watching porn…
We often are just sitting there, just like Joshua after Moses’ death – wallowing – doing nothing – outside of the best that God has given to us – begging God to take it away. While God is saying “Go and take it! It’s yours! I am giving it to you! Go!”
I am not saying what God commanded Joshua and what God is commanding us is easy.
What I am saying is twofold.
- We have been set free from porn, masturbation and lust
- God wants us to go and take it – and he has (already) given us the victory
After Moses’ death God has to call out to Joshua and encourage him to go take. In Joshua 1:5, God promises him – “as I was with Moses, so I will be with you”, he promises that “I will never leave you nor forsake you”, and in Joshua 1:9 he asks Joshua, “Have I not commanded you; be strong and courageous” and tells him not to be afraid or discouraged.
That same command is given to us.
Porn is wreaking havoc in our lives, yet we sit out side the camp. Hoping that somehow you’ll just wake up one day and never lust again
But all the while, God has given us freedom.
He just asks you to be strong and courageous, to not be afraid nor discouraged.
To get up and decide today – for today – to be done and to put it out of your life once and for all.
Joshua gets up and gathers the people of Israel to be ready for battle.
“Go in to possess the land, which the LORD your God gives you to possess it.”
Come on, let’s go! He is for us and He has given us the victory!
