Admitting you are powerless over porn is a big step.
You cannot skip it! There is no ‘pass go and collect $200’ option.
If you are truly looking to break free from pornography and masturbation, it is a requirement for the next phase of your journey.
Your False Belief
The belief that you will somehow magically escape this time is easily provable.
Go on a 30 day fast – no porn, no masturbation (other than with your spouse).
If you can do this, you are likely free from the porn habit – and, by the way, I am not saying that you don’t need support or encouragement – I am just saying, that for most folks dealing with a porn habit, it’s more like: try again; fail again – again and again.
It requires being honest with yourself – can you really stop on your own?
Or another question – is there evidence that shows you can quit it on your own?
If the answer is ‘Yes’, you will probably try again. You will gain a bit of success and at about 9 days in, you will say to yourself, ‘I’ve got this!’ Then at day 12 or so, you will be jonesin’ like honeybee and say ‘Ah I’ll just look at women in bathing suits – that’s no big deal’ and by day 15 it will be… ‘I’m sure I’ll get it next time.’
Ok… yeah… I forgot… You’re the exception.
If the answer is ‘No’ then it’s time to find a group of buddies, with the focus of kicking this habit to the curb, and building the routines you need to do so, so you can live a life of freedom.
Humility
Ironically, there is great strength in humility – so coming to terms with the fact that you are powerless of porn will actually strengthen your resolve when you do two things:
- Put your faith in someone greater than yourself (namely Jesus Christ the Son of God)
“For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus made me free from the law of sin and of death. For what the law couldn’t do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God did, sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for sin, he condemned sin in the flesh.” – Romans 8:2 & 3 – World English Bible - Gather together with other folks on mission to defeat the same struggle you are facing
“As iron sharpens iron, so a friend sharpens a friend.” – Psalm 27:17 – New Living Translation
Admitting you are powerless, opens you up to realizing that another has paved the way for you and that the whole of us together is greater than the sum of us individually.
Putting It Together
Admitting your are powerless is really the place to begin.
It is destroying the belief that you can do this on your own and it is having the humility to rely on the strength of God who has already set you free and the encouragement of other people to spur you on.
These will greatly increase your resolve.
