A devotional series on the Christian life, through the book of Joshua from the Old Testament, for guys struggling with porn addiction or habit.
In the latter part of Joshua chapter 1, Joshua goes to his fellow Israelites who have been given the land on the side of the Jordan river they are already on.
He says to them a couple of things:
- Remember what Moses commanded you when he gave you permission to stay on this side of the Jordan river and you received your rest.
- He asks them to fight with the armed mighty men of valor for their brothers until the LORD gives them their rest.
Rest
Maybe it is already obvious but – what is this rest?
This is the very reason many folks interpret the Book of Joshua as an allegory for heaven.
And while I do agree that the ‘rest’ part maybe about heaven, the war part, in my opinion, is about our Christian life – God has given us the land to take; it is our job to take for his kingdom and for his glory.
This ‘rest’, for us, comes with taking the freedom Christ has granted to us.
It comes as peace with God in our hearts versus shame.
It comes as living in the spirit; not gratifying the sinful nature and loving God with all of our heart, soul, mind and strength and removing the doublemindedness that many of us struggle with (some day I’ll talk about Dr Jekyll and Mr. Hyde).
Community
Joshua calls on his brothers who have already found rest.
God has given us the body of believers to help; to fight along with us in our fight to find our rest – our freedom.
How this might look?
Maybe it is a group of men who are dedicated to putting this mess out our lives for good.
Brothers who are strong at the moment fighting along side and encouraging those who are weak or struggling – fighting this battle together until we all have rest.
It is why I started Shackle Road.
I am ready, but to be honest I still struggle and fully admit I cannot win this on my own.
My leading this is not saying there are no more battles for me to fight.
Take note – Joshua has not been given rest yet.
He is just a brother who is rallying the others.
I’m no Joshua, but my call is the same – let’s take this land and find our rest – will you join me?
